When selecting an engineering university in Pakistan, it’s not only a question of reputation since the figure that determines which course you are admitted to depends on exactly how each university calculates merit; some universities place great emphasis on your entrance test, others are more reliant on your FSc results, and a few have a totally different formula.
The guide lists the leading
engineering universities in Pakistan for 2026, taking into account global
subject rankings and the universities’ official admission policies, together
with the exact aggregate formula that each one employs — in order that you may
know exactly what to prepare for.
How These Universities Were Selected
When shortlisting these
universities, two factors were taken into account: the institutions’ positions
in independent global rankings and whether or not their degree programmes are
recognised by the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC).
It is important to have a
PEC-accredited or PEC-recognised programme since this has a direct bearing on
whether or not you can register as a licensed engineer in Pakistan after you
have graduated; therefore, when comparing universities, you must make sure that
the specific programme is PEC-accredited and not just that the university as a
whole is.

Top 5 Engineering Universities in Pakistan (2026)
This year, the top five
engineering universities in Pakistan are listed below, together with the
admission requirements for each one. To find out where
you stand before you apply, you can use aggregate calculators for Pakistan’s leading universities to check your merit score in just a few seconds.
1. The National University of Sciences and
Technology — Islamabad
engineering university in Pakistan as stated in the QS World University
Rankings by Subject 2026 and achieves this position by a large margin in terms
of international recognition.
The Islamabad campus contains the School of
Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering (SMME) and the School of Electrical
Engineering and Computer Science (SEECS), both of which are regarded as among
the most competitive engineering schools in the country.
Almost all admissions are obtained
via the NUST Entry Test (NET). The official formula for determining merit is:
•
NUST Entry Test (NET): 75%
•
Intermediate (FSc Part-I) or
A-Level: 15%
•
Matriculation / O-Level: 10%
The NET is a 200-item exam that
lasts for three hours and includes Mathematics, Physics, and English for the
majority of engineering programmes. Since the test accounts for 75 per cent of
the total mark, your NET score is much more important than your board marks.

2. Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute (GIKI), Topi,
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
GIKI is a private research
university which is known for requiring among its applicants some of the
strongest academic qualifications and yet ranks very highly in terms of
teaching quality even though it is smaller in size than the public-sector
universities such as NUST or UET.
GIKI uses a simpler two-part
formula than most other universities:
•
GIKI Admission Test: 85%
•
HSSC / SSC marks: 15%
The admission test consists of
80 multiple-choice questions carrying a total of 200 marks. The test has to be
completed within 120 minutes. The scoring system is +3 for correct answers
and –1 for incorrect ones, which applies only to the Mathematics and Physics
sections. The fee for the test is Rs. 3,000 (or Rs. 4,500 in the case of late
submissions).

3. FAST-NUCES (National University of Computer
and Emerging Sciences) — Multiple Campuses
FAST-NUCES is one of the most
desired universities in Pakistan for studies in Computer Science and other
related fields, and it has campuses in Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar and
Faisalabad.
Different from UET or NUST, FAST does not accept the ECAT; instead
it administers its own entrance test (the FAST NU Test) and also takes into
account NTS NAT or SAT scores.
FAST actually uses two different
formulas depending on the program:
•
Computing & Business programs:
10% Matric + 40% FSc + 50% Entry Test
•
Engineering programs: 17% Matric +
50% FSc + 33% Entry Test
FSc marks have
much greater importance for those applying for engineering than for those
applying for computing — a point that many students fail to notice.

4. The University of Engineering and Technology
at Lahore
UET Lahore, which was founded in
1921, is one of the oldest engineering universities in the country and
continues to serve as the standard reference for ECAT-based admissions in
Punjab; the same basic approach is followed at its Taxila campus with the only
exception relating to the BS Math and BS Physics programs.
The standard UET Lahore / UET
Taxila formula is:
•
Matriculation: 17%
•
FSc (Intermediate): 50%
•
ECAT Score: 33%
ECAT is a computer-administered
test consisting of 100 multiple-choice questions worth a total of 400 marks
which has to be completed within 100 minutes and includes no negative marking.
It should be noted that UET Peshawar and UET Mardan make no use of ECAT at all. These universities administer a separate test known as ETEA, which is based on a
different formula. So it would be incorrect to assume that the criteria are the
same at all UET campuses.
You can calculate your ECAT aggregate here after your test results have been released.

5. The NED University of Engineering and
Technology in Karachi
NED is the oldest and most
well-established engineering university in Karachi and provides a range of
programmes in engineering, architecture and applied sciences via its main
campus and its affiliated campuses (the City Campus, the LEJ Campus and the
Thar Campus).
Under NED’s revised 2025/26
admission policy, the formula is:
•
HSC Part-I (Intermediate, first
year only): 40%
•
NED Pre-Admission Entry Test: 60%
Please note that NED
makes no provision for Matric marks in its formula — a point which surprises a
great many applicants who have come from universities such as UET or NUST where
Matric marks do count.
The entry test now accounts for 60% of the total weight,
an increase from previous years, which makes it the most important factor
affecting your chances of being admitted.

Other Engineering Universities Worth Knowing
Beyond the top 5, several other
institutions are worth considering depending on your specific field of
interest:
•
Located in Islamabad, PIEAS (the
Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences) is strong in the areas
of nuclear science and engineering related to applied physics and is affiliated
with PAEC.
•
If you are interested in aerospace
or avionics engineering rather than mechanical or civil engineering, then the
Institute of Space Technology (IST) in Islamabad is the one to choose.
•
In Islamabad the NUTECH (National
University of Technology), a publicly owned option, uses its own NUET formula
which consists of 10% from the SSC, 20% from the HSSC and 70% from the test.
•
The Air University in Islamabad provides
courses in mechatronics, electronics, and telecommunications engineering.
When you are looking at civil,
electrical, mechanical, or software engineering, most of the universities
mentioned have all four of these as their main areas of study. The difference
generally lies in the strength of the faculty and the lab facilities.
Types of Engineering Fields You Can Study in
Pakistan
After you have chosen a university,
your next step is to decide which branch of engineering you want to specialize
in. The most popular choices available at the universities mentioned above are
Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Software, and Computer Engineering.
These are
the largest and most widely available fields across the country. In addition to
these, several universities also provide more specialized programmes such
as Aerospace, Biomedical, Automotive, and Petroleum Engineering.

2. Scope of Civil Engineering in Pakistan
There is no one best field since
it all comes down to your interests and the industry you wish to work in. At
the moment, Software and Computer Engineering have the greatest demand in the
job market, whereas Civil and Electrical are the ones most frequently available
at almost all engineering universities in the country.
Why PEC Accreditation Matters
Before you apply to any
university, you should check that the particular engineering programme is
accredited or recognised by the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC), since this
is not merely a formality.
If you have a degree that is not accredited by the
PEC you will not be able to register as a Professional Engineer in Pakistan. This in turn affects your capacity to work on regulated
engineering projects in the future.
Although all of the five universities
mentioned above provide PEC-accredited programmes in their main engineering
subjects, you should always verify the status of the specific programme on the
programme’s dedicated page.
